How to Immigrate to Alberta, Canada

There are several ways to permanently immigrate to Alberta, Canada, under two major categories.

1. Apply Directly to Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Express Entry Program

You may apply directly at the agency through its Express Entry program under the following entry categories:

  • Canadian Experience Class – a program that allows foreigners with Canadian work experience to become permanent residents.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program – a program for foreigners who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program – a program for foreigners who want to become permanent residents with formal education and whose occupation falls under the National Occupation Classification.

You can also apply directly to Citizenship and Immigration Canada for:

  • Investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed people – people who wish to establish business presence in Canada.
  • Sponsoring your family – qualified Canadian residents who wish to bring their family members into Canada.

2. Apply Through the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program

If you have determined you have the skills in demand in Alberta, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) may be something you can consider. Under this nominee program, there are a few options depending on your eligibility.

  • Employer Driven Stream – This program is for Alberta employers who want to retain a foreign worker on a permanent, full-time basis where there is a challenge finding Albertans/Canadians to fill the position.
  • Strategic Recruitment Stream – This program is for candidates who have a valid trade certificate in a Compulsory or Optional Trade in Alberta issued or recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
  • Self-Employed Farmer Stream – This program is for candidates with proven farm management skills, with sufficient financial resources and invest primarily in farming business in Alberta.

Applying for permanent residence in Alberta through the AINP is a two-step process:

Step 1 – Apply to the AINP and be nominated.
Step 2 – Apply to CIC as a Provincial Nominee. CIC makes the final decision on all permanent resident applications.
