A five-vehicle crash in Melbourne has killed a Filipino couple as they were on their way to work.
Jesus and Alma Remo were joined by daughter Jessa as they were driving on Hopkins Rd in Truganina when their Mazda Tribute and a tip truck collided at 6am Thursday.
In a report by Herald Sun, a utility vehicle, 4WD and a truck were also involved in the crash. Jesus and Alma died at the scene of accident while 19-year-old Jessa and the truck driver were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries.
The death of the couple left Jessa and two brothers orphaned.
Archie Alvarez, a friend of the Remos said Jesus was a good man and was very involved in the family. Another friend, Marlon Elano, said Jesus was a trustworthy man.
The Remo family moved to Australia seven years ago from th Philippines.
Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said the accident’s occurence was a bit of a mystery.
“The investigation is going to have to centre around movements and behaviours of all of the drivers in this crash,” he said.
Authorities believe a series of small collisions among the utility vehicle, the 4WD and a truck carrying an excavator are believed to have caused the Mazda to overcorrect on wet road conditions and crash into the tip truck.
The Mazda, travelling behind the ute, is believed to have attempted to avoid the crash and while overcorrecting has collided with an oncoming tip truck.
Drivers of the tip truck, 4WD and the utility vehicle were assessed at the scene and did not require medical attention. The truck driver was discharged from the hospital later in the afternoon.
