Pinay Helper in Dubai Sends Money to PH, Wins 1 Million Dirhams

One could argue that sending money to her family in the Philippines was like buying a lottery ticket for a Dubai-based Filipino domestic worker. And winning the lottery.

By beating the odds of getting picked out of five million entries, Gina Soriano’s raffle ticket obtained for remitting money to her family won AED1 million (about P14.5 million).

“I was very surprised to be this year’s millionaire,” Gina Soriano, the fifth winner of the raffle’s grand prize, told Gulf News yesterday, Aug. 29. “This is a life-changing event that will surely help me improve my life and realize my dreams, including providing a decent life for my family.”

Soriano sent AED1,695 (about P24,600) to her family in the Philippines via Al Ansari Exchange, which held a rewards raffle draw that entitles customers to win prizes in a two-month promotion period.

Out of the five million entries all over the UAE, nine coupons, including Soriano’s, were drawn on Aug. 14 for the pre-qualifying round.

The grand prize of 1 million dirhams was drawn last Tuesday, August 28, and streamed live. Soriano’s raffle ticket was picked as winner.

“We hope that the cash prize will make a positive difference in her life and her family’s life,” Rashid Al Ansari, general manager of the company, said in the report. “We were also overwhelmed by the number of entries we received during this year’s promo.”

Two other Filipinos were lucky to win prizes. Honesto Dela Cruz won AED10,000 (about P145,500) while expat Antonio Artisuela Cano took home a Mercedes Benz 2018 model.
