Death benefit can be a monthly pension that is given only to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death. A lump sum amount is granted to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had spent less than 36 monthly dues before the semester of death.

Who are eligible to receive the SSS death benefit

  • Primary beneficiary – legitimate spouse, dependent children (adopted or illegitimate)
  • Secondary beneficiary – parents of the deceased member
    * The member can also designate a party that is not related to him/her as the beneficiary of the death claim.

How much can beneficiaries receive upon the death of an SSS member

Computation of benefit depends on how much did the member contributes to SSS, the credited years of service (or CYS), and the number of minor children below the age of five.

The highest amount resulting from one of these three pension formulas will determine the monthly pension:

  • The sum of P300 plus 20 percent of the average monthly salary credit plus two percent of the average monthly salary credit for each credited year of service (CYS) above ten years; or
  • 40% percent of the average monthly salary credit; or
  • P1,000, if the CYS is less than 10; P1,200 if with at least 10 CYS; or P2,400, if the CYS is 20 or more.

How to apply for SSS death benefits

Here are three simple steps on how to use the SSS death benefit.

Step 1. Fill out the Consolidated Dates Disability and Retirement Claim Form (DDR-1) using BLACK ink. Make sure all information is accurate and complete. Besides the DDR-1 form, all beneficiaries must submit a copy of the Filer’s Affidavit.

Step 2. Submit the forms along with the supporting documents to the nearest SSS branch. Take note: Personal appearance is a MUST. Other materials needed for filing SSS death claims are:
DDR Savings Account Form
– Passbook (only Pension)
– Report of Death (for work-related death cases)
SSS Form CLD 13A (Affidavit for Death Claim), if a claimant is a secondary beneficiary)
– SSS Form CLD 13 (Joint affidavit), if the claimant is a legal heir)
– Photo of the applicant and valid IDs
– Marriage certificate of the deceased (if married)
– Birth certificates of minor children

Step 3. Wait for the approval of claims. Claimants will be informed when to claim the benefit. There is no final period for the processing of death claims. It is estimated, however, that the assessment runs more or less 90 days.

For monthly pension, the member should have made 36 monthly contributions six months before his/her death. On the other hand, the lump sum is granted when the member had paid less than 36 monthly dues. For a lump sum, monetary benefits are computed by multiplying the monthly pension and the number of monthly contributions before the member’s death.

The deceased member’s beneficiaries are entitled to a 13th-month pension, payable every December, and the funeral benefit, which is paid to whoever shouldered the funeral expenses of the deceased member.

Survivorship pensioners before the effectivity of RA 7875 on March 4, 1995, are also entitled to hospitalization benefits under PhilHealth. They need to register under PhilHealth and must submit a DDR print-out indicating the type of claim is survivorship in nature and the effectivity date of pension or a copy of Death/Survivorship Certification issued by the SSS indicating the effectivity of the premium shall be submitted to PhilHealth.

Survivorship pensioners under the effectivity of RA 7875 on March 4, 1995, and after that, are no longer covered. However, those who wish to avail of PhilHealth benefits may enroll in the Individually – Paying Program (for voluntary/self-employed) or the Indigent Program (IP) of PhilHealth.
