The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has declared the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) as viable target market for their online farming courses.
TESDA Director-General Isidro S. Lapena noted that agriculture was among the agency’s course offerings that had a relatively low take-up from the OFWs. Aside from the farm courses, Lapena cited they will be also be offering lifelong learning skills and information and communication technology to the OFWs.
As of the end of 2020, TESDA had a total of 2,679 enrollees for its fruit grower’s course. Face-to-face trainings in the agri-fishery sector are also available aside from the online courses offered.
Returning OFWs mostly prefer online tourism courses as shown by the TESDA data. An estimated 23,818 OFWs of their dependents enrolled in tourism courses between March and December 2020. Human health/ healthcare comes next to their preference with 12,368 enrollees for the same period, followed by entrepreneurship with 11,416 enrollees.
