Filipina Tied to a Tree by Saudi Employer Repatriated Back to Philippines

A Filipina domestic worker who was tied to a tree by her employer in Saudi Arabia has been repatriated back to the Philippines.

A photo of Lovely Acosta Baruelo tied to a tree in Saudi capital of Riyadh has gone viral on social media as fellow Filipinos asked for help on her behalf.

“The Philippine Embassy in Riyadh reported that the case of OFW Baruelo was referred to them on May 9 and she was repatriated on the same day. It wasn’t immediately known the reason behind why Baruelo, who reportedly hails from Bauang, La Union was tied to a tree.

“OFW Baruelo was allegedly punished by her employer by being tied to a tree.”

“The DFA reports that OFW (overseas Filipino worker) Lovely Acosta Baruelo from Saudi Arabia arrived in Manila at 8:55 p.m. on 9 May 2019,” it said in a statement sent through Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Fernandez.

Saudi Arabia hosts a significant share of Filipino workers abroad as domestic workers, construction workers and retail staff. Some of whom often suffer exploitation and abuse.
