150,000 OFWs Expected Home For Christmas

Thousands of Filipino workers based overseas are expected to arrive in the Philippines to spend the holiday, a government estimate said.

“Usually, we expect, dito sa Christmas season alone, 100,000 to 150,000 returning workers,” said Hans Cacdac, head of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The number, Cacdac said, also includes those who will spend time in the Philippines by the turn of the new year.

Value of money remittances from overseas Filipinos have continued to increase.

In an OWWA board meeting, the Department of Finance announced that there was an increase in the remittances of OFWs on the 3rd quarter of this year, Cadcac said.

“I heard $24-B as of the 3rd quarter and we are expected to hit $28-B at the end of the year which is an all-time high,” he said, citing Filipinos in the US and Middle East as main sources of remittance increase.
