Cebu Pacific Plans Flights to Australia
MELBOURNE continues to outpace Sydney in the quest for a second international airport after a deal to allow international flights from The Philippines to Avalon airport, near Geelong, broke down another hurdle.
The agreement, to be unveiled today, allows carriers from both countries to launch daily flights between the airport and The Philippines and at least one Filipino airline, budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air, has expressed interest and approached the federal government.
Manila-based Cebu last year signed a lease order for wide-body Airbus A330-300 aircraft for use in long-haul flights it said would include Australia.
It is planning to acquire up to eight 436-seat A330s and in January announced its first long-haul destination would be Dubai in October.
The federal government last October changed Avalon’s lease conditions to allow for the building of a new terminal to service international flights.
