A United Arab Emirates court has sentenced a Filipino salesman to six months in jail for stealing a diamond worth 30,000 dirhams (P383,003), a local paper reported on Thursday.
The Court of First Instance ordered the 32-year-old Filipino deported after he serves his jail term, the Khaleej Times said.
It said Court records showed that the Filipino was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage taking the diamond and trying to hide it.
The incident occurred last May, when the Filipino was in charge of making an inventory about the jewelry items inside the shop, located in Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai.
A fellow salesman of the Filipino said CCTV footage showed the defendant hiding a diamond piece under his papers.
“He tried to act smart and said a piece of diamond was missing … He then moved to another counter and put the piece in his pocket,” the witness said.
When the shop’s director called the Filipino and confronted him with the footage the Filipino allegedly broke down and admitted to stealing the diamond.
He said he was ready to give it back and pleaded his superior not to report him to the police.
