Filipino Dies After Falling in Elevator Shaft in Saipan
A Filipino worker died after he reportedly fell from an elevator shaft at a golf facility in Saipan Sunday night.
Jose Mertola, 58, succumbed to multiple lacerations in the head, right arm, left ribs, and right inner thigh, after he reportedly fell from an elevator shaft at Laolao Bay Golf and Resort, according to Derek Gersonde, spokesman of the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DFEMS).
Mertola was working in an area of the elevator that was between 20 and 30 feet in height. He was later found at the bottom of the elevator shaft and was rushed to the Commonwealth Health Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:06pm.
Initial investigation indicated that the cause of death was accident. According to Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason Tarkong said yesterday investigation was ongoing and he has yet to receive a copy of police reports.
Gersonde said that on Sunday, DFEMS received a call about a possible missing person working in an elevator shaft at Laolao Bay Golf and Resort. Paramdeics and firefighters from Garapan, Kagman, and Susupe fire Stations promptly responded to the scene. But while the teams were on their way to the scene, dispatchers informed them that the victim was found at the bottom of the elevator shaft, unresponsive, unconscious and not breathing. A box cutter was on his hand when Mertola was found.
It was unclear whether Mertola is working as a maintenance worker at the resort.
