Filipina Nurse in UAE Charged With Jewelry Theft

A 25-year-old Filipina working as a private nurse has been accused of stealing a pendant worth AED7,000 (P95,804) from an elderly woman she was hired to care for.

According to a report by Gulf News, the Filipina nurse allegedly took with her a golden pendant left on the table inside the house of a 74-year-old Emirati woman in August.

The defendant, according to court records, then walked into a jewelry shop and attempted to sell the pendant, claiming that she received it as a gift from the elderly woman. Prosecutors then charged the Filipina with theft.

Before Dubai Court of First Instance, the defendant on Wednesday pleaded guilty and asked presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi to hand her a lenient punishment.

The 74-year-old woman claimed to prosecutors that she learnt about the theft when the jeweller informed her over the phone that the suspect was trying to sell him a pendant.

“The jeweller called me and informed me that the nurse entered his shop and tried to sell the pendant. He claimed that when he asked her if she had the pendant’s receipt, she alleged that she got it as a gift from me. Then I told the jeweller that I had not gifted her anything and that the pendant had been stolen … then I went to the police station and complained against the 25 year old,” she testified to prosecutors.

A ruling will be heard on December 28.
