Homesick OFW Falls from 4th Floor While Escaping Employer
A Filipino domestic helper in Saudi Arabia who fell from the fourth floor of a residential building while trying to escape from her employer’s premises has been repatriated with assistance from the Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah.
According to case officer Mary Ann Hope, “Edith” fell from her employer’s flat in the building’s fourth floor in May using a rope as her way to deal with homesickness.
Edith, who spent months recuperating from the incident, arrived in Saudi Arabia on March 7, 2018. The incident happened on the last week of May.
“Naho-homesick daw po siya sa kanyang pamilya kaya siya tumakas nang amin na siyang makausap sa hospital,” said Hipe.
Concerned OFW reported the incident to the Consulate. Meanwhile, Consul General Edgar Badajos urged Filipinos aiming to work abroad to consider the possibility of feeling homesick.
He said Edith was a “classic example” of an OFW who loses her will to work and decides to go home instead due to homesickness.
“Siya ‘yung classic example ng HSW (household service worker) na nag-decide umuwi dahil ayon sa kanya na-homesick daw siya at nawalan ng interes magtrabaho,” said Badajos.
