A Hong Kong court has found a Filipino domestic worker guilty of stealing jewelry worth HK$365,000 (P2.34 million) at his former employer’s home last year, Asia Times reported, quoting local press.
According to court records, Laberos Alberio Ibanez, 59, between February 2 and July 30, 2016, stole 28 items of assorted jewelry, including watches and earrings from a villa on Black’s Link in Mid-Levels Hong Kong where he worked, Apple Daily reported.
He pawned the jewelry and received HK$59,900 in cash. However, when he went to Macau, he gambled the money and lost.
Before the Eastern Magistrates Court, Ibanez admitted to the theft charge and said he would like to apologize to his former employer, Brianna Chan Ling-lei, who is a former Hong Kong television drama actress. In his confession, Ibanez admitted to sending the money to his mother in the Philippines.
On February 9, the defendant was handed a 16-month jail term, less than the usual sentence of 24 months for similar cases, Sing Tao Daily reported.
On her part, Chan told media that she had paid the pawn shops to recover 24 pieces of jewelry, but the rest could not be found.
