Honest NAIA Janitor Elena Abreo Honored For Returning Bag With P100K Cash, Valuables
A 45-year-old janitor has been honored by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) for returning the backpack containing cash and valuables of a returning overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Saudi Arabia.
Elena Abreo was personally honored by NAIA Terminal 1 manager Dante Basanta and her fellow janitors and other airport workers during a flag-raising ceremony.
Abreo was on duty 4pm last Saturday at the Customs arrival area when she spotted a black backpack left on a baggage cart by arriving passenger Samuel Fernando Aquino of Asingan, Pangasinan. The backpack, which reportedly contained about P100,000 worth of cash and other valuable items, was returned to Aquino using the airport’s public address system to alert the bag’s owner.
Aquino rewarded Abreo with P500.
Abreo, who is a contractual employee of the airport for the past 10 years, is a widow who earns P400 daily to raise her five children.
“I know God is watching, and the owner worked for the money and equipment inside the backpack,” she said.
