Multiple Dead, Several Injured After Vehicle Drives Into Crowd at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Festival

A street festival celebrating Filipino heritage in Vancouver turned tragic Saturday evening after a vehicle plowed into a crowd, killing several people and injuring many others.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street during the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, a community event honouring Filipino history and culture. Vancouver Police confirmed that the driver involved is in custody.

Sources told Global News that at least eight people, including a child, are dead, and at least six others are injured. Vancouver Police have not officially confirmed these numbers but are expected to provide a public update at midnight local time.

Witnesses described a black Audi SUV driving through the crowd without warning. Social media videos from the scene showed emergency crews attending to victims lying on the ground, with festivalgoers visibly distraught.

Authorities have yet to release details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or the identity of the suspect.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. Several political leaders have expressed their condolences and support.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who had made a campaign stop at the festival earlier in the day, said he was “horrified” to hear of the attack. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and Vancouver’s Filipino community, who were coming together today to celebrate resilience,” Singh posted on X.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by what he called a “horrific incident.” He added, “Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”

B.C. Premier David Eby also posted on social media, expressing that he was “shocked and heartbroken” by the loss of life and injuries, confirming that a suspect is in custody and that the province is in contact with the City of Vancouver to offer support.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called the attack “senseless,” offering thoughts for the Filipino community and thanking first responders for their swift action. Liberal leader Mark Carney said he was “devastated” and offered his condolences, stating, “We are all mourning with you.”

The Lapu Lapu Day event, officially recognized in B.C. last year, commemorates Lapu Lapu, a 16th-century Filipino hero who resisted Spanish colonization. The festival was meant to be a celebration of bayanihan — the spirit of collective community effort — and a bridge between cultures in British Columbia.

Earlier in the day, festivities had been joyful, with performances, food stalls, and appearances by local leaders. Global News anchor Jason Pires, who emceed the event, noted that provincial MLAs and Premier Eby had attended during the morning. A performance by a member of the Black Eyed Peas had just ended when the tragedy struck.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or captured video footage to come forward as the investigation continues.

More updates are expected as Vancouver Police prepare to hold a press conference later tonight.
