An unnamed Filipino maid is being held for suspicion of infanticide after being accused of throwing a newborn baby to his death from a high-rise apartment block in Ma On Shan district in the New Territories.
The body of the infant with his umbilical cord still attached was found suspended Sunday evening on a clothes drying rack by a horrified resident from an apartment on a lower floor. The resident called in the police which conducted checks on flats within the vicinity where the dead baby was found.
The maid was thought to have kept her pregnancy without the knowledge of her Chinese employer. Bosses typically don’t like the idea of having a domestic helper pregnant during her 2-year working contract as this means they will have to shoulder her hospitalization and medical expenses while giving birth, not to mention the disruption from work the pregnancy may cause.
The maid was accused of throwing the baby out of the window shortly after birth.
