Pinoy Nurse Jonathan Aquino in UK Caught on Tape Assaulting Dementia Patient

By on April 14, 2012

A nurse secretly filmed attacking an elderly Alzheimer’s sufferer in her care home bed was jailed yesterday.

Jonathan Aquino, 30, was caught when Jane Worroll suspected her mother Maria, 80, was being mistreated and hid a camera in her bedroom.

In the harrowing images, Aquino is seen to suddenly strike the retired school canteen manager in the face before slapping her arms repeatedly.

The Filipino, who has an 18 month-old daughter, then finishes the attack by hitting Mrs Worroll in her abdomen four times.

Sentencing Aquino to 18 months in jail, Judge Henry Blacksell QC told the nurse he was guilty of a ‘dreadful breach of trust’.

‘It is distressing for anybody to have to watch what’s contained on the footage,’ he said at Blackfriars Crown Court, central London.

‘This poor woman had been transferred to this institution in the hope that she should receive proper care and attention.

‘Quite rightly, society in general is extremely concerned about the treatment of the elderly and vulnerable in institutions such as this.

‘They should be able to expect better, and I am afraid those who are caught misusing their responsibility should be held to account.’

this statement is somewhat a clean-hands-off the issue "not a member of the association".. although they are right in stating that this is not a localized event. things like this should serve as a public awareness because healthcare abuses can happen anywhere around the globe and it does not know any race or culture. I would salute the PNA-UK if they will express deep dissatisfaction and intolerance to incidents like this rather than washing their hands and saying " he is not a member of the association"– this statement is an utter bullshit!

Irma de Vera says:

Kuya PJ, hindi siya talaga member ng PNA-UK kasi hindi naman siya nurse sa UK eh… Caregiver siya. Jonathan Aquino is a qualified nurse in the Philippines, but not in the UK :)

Pj Jabines says:

Yes i do understand that but it is just like saying an apple is not an apple because it has fallen off a basket of apples. Get what i mean?

Filipino doctors, nurses, carers, health caregivers, etc worldwide, we care and love you all for bringing a good name to our mother country- the Philippines. Preserve, continue and upheld your devotion and dedication to the service that you've been sworn in. You're but humans and subject to commit mistakes, but please think twice. GOD is ready at all times to help you solve problems. HE loves us all, so trust HIM. Don't ever repeat the wrong done by a misguided brother Jonathan Aquino who needs repentance and enlightenment. I know he'll tread God'/s way.

Lord, please help all of them do the right way all the time. Include my son and his family in London, my 2 grandchildren in the KSA and a niece also in the Middle East. Thank you.

Hannah Mountain says:

You are a disgrace to all the Filipino community and giving all the OFWs a bad name around the world. I think If Florence Nightingale was still alive she would probably cry her eyes out.

Damnthesebadapples says:

shame on him, that's the reason why Filipinos arent genuinely trusted. Bad apples like him put a scar on people's minds and think of the rest as the same! Hence, the reason why honest and good Filipinos who dont deserve the same kind of treatment result to changing their nationalities.
I'm a Filipino and seeing, knowing, hearing news about Filipinos like these.. puts me into a huge embarrassment and shame. NOT PROUD AT ALL!

While we are deeply saddened by this isolated and upsetting news. The Philippine Nurses Association of UK, as the official and recognized professional association of Filipino Nurses in the UK, would like to seek the general public’s forbearance and consideration in so far as quickly generalizing the same manner of nursing practice and behavior for the Filipino nurse at large. We are asking the public to refrain from making sweeping statements about any Filipino nurse or any Filipino for that matter. We believe that this is an isolated case and would like instead learn from it. Furthermore, we would like to ask that impartiality be given to any Filipino individual and any preconception on character, behavior or work ethics be suspended.

Finally, we would like to make it clear that Filipino nurses have been trained to the highest standards of nursing service and that members of the association are always reminded of and encouraged to practice the timeless values of excellence, honor and integrity in service. kawawa naman ang matanda, being a nurse and caring for the elders you should have enough patience. If you easily lost your temper better not apply this kind of job because one does wrong will affect many Filipino in applying job anywhere abroad.
