A 28-year-old Filipino was sentenced to serve 6 years in prison for attempting to rob a bank, carjacking and intimidating a victim 2 months ago in Vienna, Austria.
Jariel Berberabe pleaded guilty to each offense during his arraignment Wednesday before Viennese District Judge Martina Spreitzer-Kropiunik Zola.

On April 8, 2010, Berberabe tried to rob the Volksbank in Vienna’s 19th District. Berberabe reportedly threatened the bank employee and demanded money. However, the suspect panicked and hurriedly left the bank empty handed after the teller released the alarm button.
During his escape, the Filipino stopped a car owned by a photographer and at knife point, ordered him out of the vehicle.
A police dog was able to track down Berberabe and he was subsequently apprehended by a special unit shortly after he fled the scene.
A Pinoy acquaintance of the suspect could not believe that he could do such a thing. The Pinoy added that Berberabe’s mounting gambling debts probably drove him to commit the crime.
