A 28–year–old Filipino sailor charged with possession of child pornography will spend the next two months in a Newfoundland and Labrador jail.
Guilbert Ong, a crew member on board the Maltese-registered oil tanker Surfer Rosa, was arrested by RCMP officers at the Come By Chance refinery in Placentia Bay on June 15. Canadian Border Services agents discovered child pornography during a routine search.

Police later revealed that video of child pornography was found on his cell phone while his cabin was being searched. Investigators also discovered four more videos on an external hard drive.
In a Clarenville court on Tuesday, Ong pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and smuggling. He’s been sentenced to 60 days in jail, though he was given credit for eight days already served while he was in police custody.
In addition to giving a DNA sample, Ong will also be registered as a sex offender in the country’s national database.
Crown prosecutors say Ong will likely be deported after he serves his sentence.
