OWWA Offers 2011-2012 Scholarship for OFW Dependents

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) shall award one hundred (100) scholarship slots to qualified dependents of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW)-Members who shall enroll in any 4 to 5 years baccalaureate course for school year 2011-2012.

In order to be eligible to said scholarship, the applicant must be a Filipino Citizen, and be a beneficiary/dependent of an OWWA member. The beneficiary/dependent as used herein shall be limited to children of married OFWs or brother/sister of unmarried OFWs. The applicant must not be more than 21 years of age; be a high school graduate; in good health; and must pass the qualifying examinations, which is the Department of Science and Technology National Examination, and the College Admission Test of the school where he or she intends to enroll.

For those who will qualify for the scholarship program, a financial assistance amounting to P60,000.00 per year shall be provided. Tuition fees shall be paid directly to the school, while the remaining amount from the financial assistance shall be released to the scholar upon submission of grades for the semester. If the tuition exceeds the amount of financial assistance, the scholar shall pay for the difference.

The scholar is also free to choose his/her desired field of study as long as the program is offered by a Commission on Higher Education accredited college or university. The scholarship will continue until completion of the course, which is four to five years, regardless of the status of the OFW membership provided the provisions in the Scholarship Agreement are complied with.

The grant is only provided only once and is non-transferable, and the scholar must not be a recipient of other scholarship grants.

The applicant is also required to submit the following documents to the OWWA Regional Office in his/her place of residence, and these are: 2 sets of accomplished application forms; 2 copies of 1”x1” ID pictures; proof of relationship to Member like copy of the Birth Certificate of the applicant which is duly certified by the Local Civil Registrar; form 137 or transcript of records; and lastly, proof of OWWA Membership.

OWWA said that all qualified applicants shall be selected and ranked according to their performance in the qualifying exam for the scholarship. It was also bared that the scholars shall be selected and recommended by the OWWA Scholarship Committee. Further, the approval of the Administrator will be considered final and unappealable.

According to OWWA, the filing of application should be on or before September 15, 2011, and the date of the examination will be announced later.
